K3b
Notes:
This is another great program - love it! The first time I successfully burned a bootable CD it was using K3b - also, 1st time I successfully burned a DVD. This is so much easier to use than anything for Windows, now always use linux to make optical discs |

Dia
Notes:
Haven't used this in over a year - have been waiting for it to mature, since a) Visio is one of my favorite Windows apps (started using it before M$ bought it), and b) I specifically wished for a Visio clone for Linux. |

ImageMagick
Notes:
Has some nice viewers and utils, but doesn't seem to show up well in menus. It seems friendly w/ FVWM, though. Something most of these new-fangled apps can't claim... |

metacity
Notes:
Okay, this window manager is utterly transparent. I know it is running, and I know it is doing stuff, but there seems to be no way to configure or control it directly [by name]. What's up with that? |

LAME (Lame Ain't an MP3 Encoder)
Notes:
This is one of those - "gotta have" things - which is not necessarily a good thing, you just "gotta have it" if you want to do anything non-trivial using MP3 under Linux. Period. |

VLC media player
Notes:
I like this one a lot too - cross platform, have it on the USB stick from PortableApps.com |

F-Spot
Notes:
This runs auto-magickally from within the GNOME file browser (Nautilus? GNOME doesn't show me the names of things like it should) - I could will be adding a list of features I would like to see added to it. |

GNU tar
Notes:
Is there anything better? |
It's a list of software used to accomplish something. LAMP is an example.
