Debian
Notes:
Have used this quite a lot across several versions, as well as a number of derivative distros (KNOPPIX, DSL). It seems fairly solid until you throw something like KDE or GNOME at it... |

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA)
Notes:
Lots of problems with this software on various laptops. Now using Esound with better results. I still don't know if the current problems with Audacity are because of the audio layer stuff, or are within Audacity. |

Pidgin IM (ex-Gaim)
Notes:
IM client - not bad - don't use IM much - like the encryption and Off the Record (OtR) plugins. Google Talk shows a lot of promise, though, with it's VoIP and video integration. |

GnuPG
Notes:
Get it or be enslaved by the Fascist Overlords! |

gedit
Notes:
gEdit rocks (for a GUI text editor - it's no Emacs, mind you) |

PuTTY
Notes:
Been using this pretty much since it came out - now have the PortableApps.com version the USB stick and use it to SSH to my Linux servers... have also used it to tunnel X-Windows, VNC, etc "at work" - WinSCP is an excellent companion program for this. |

avahi
Notes:
This is another one I find running but am not sure what it does - have to look it up. |

gThumb image viewer and browser
Notes:
This one seems cool - just used it for the first time a few days ago. |

Amarok
Notes:
Looking for a replacement for this - nice program, but it seems to be KDE/Qt based, and I'm still planning to move entirely to GNOME/Gtk, which is less resource intensive, any way you slice it, it seems. |
It's a list of software used to accomplish something. LAMP is an example.
