Since we launched the Storj network, our growth has been phenomenal. In the last six months alone, we’ve scaled the amount of data stored by about 50 percent each month. Today, we are storing over 30PBs on the network! We anticipate that the recent ... [More] partnerships we’ve entered into will fuel this growth even further, pushing the use of the network from petabytes to exabytes. Before our network can support that many users and that much data, we need to make some updates to the architecture, and those adjustments will take time to implement. To accomplish our growth plan, Storj will gate access for new users to guarantee zero impact to existing users. New users will still be able to register, and will be placed on the waiting list. We expect to open up service to a limited number of users over the next several months. We’re committed to supporting our current users and farmers. Users who are building on top of Storj can continue development of their applications uninterrupted, as the library endpoints will remain the same. When we roll out the architecture updates, we will do everything we can to minimize impact. For farmers, this change in architecture will establish a foundation for massive growth, as well as additional opportunities to monetize unused storage. When our new architecture goes live, farmers with the best reputations (those who maintain their connections and data integrity) will be poised to reap great rewards. Scalability is the biggest challenge that developers focused on decentralized projects have faced over the last decade. We know – we have been working on this for the past four years. The data we’ve obtained, and the insights gleaned as we have grown, have helped us identify this way forward. The network resulting from this shift in Storj’s architecture will lead to increased payouts for farmers, improved performance for users and a completely decentralized cloud storage platform that developers can use to power the decentralized applications of the future.  When our architectural updates go live, we are confident the network will be capable of scaling into the exabytes of data stored and able to better support the partners who are currently building on top of our platform. The new architecture will focus on these main innovations: rebuilding how nodes that store data communicate with one another; modifying how companies, applications and developers upload and interact with the network; and spreading metadata across individual nodes on the network.Through these changes, data will be better replicated across a global geography to ensure that if users have access to the internet, they will be able to access their data – even during a major outage or natural disaster. The architecture will also enhance data audits to better guarantee data integrity. The new architecture will deliver enhanced scalability, security and resilience. Scalability – we will be able to scale into the exabyte range and satisfy the storage needs of our largest users and partners. Security – the new architecture will improve decentralization, reducing the likelihood of cyber security threats like DDOS attacks or hacking.   Resilience – nodes will better communicate with each other if they go offline, ensuring users maintain access to their data even in the event that a portion of a file becomes corrupt or is lost. We are committed to building and sustaining a platform that can last generations. It’s our commitment to our existing and future customers to do this right. Our core values include transparency and trust. The Storj team will share milestones and progress via our town halls and newsletters/blog posts. If you have any questions, reach out to our Rocket.Chat channel. We plan to issue an updated Storj whitepaper in the months to come. – The Storj Team [Less]

Today, the Storj Labs team is pleased to announce our STORJ token is now supported on ShapeShift, one of the top instant digital asset exchanges in the world. This marks another milestone for Storj Labs, as ShapeShift’s API will enable companies ... [More] integrating with Storj to leverage smart contracts to exchange STORJ for other digital assets in real time. Other STORJ token holders can also swap STORJ for a wide array of digital assets without having to store them on a centralized exchange. Our team feels this integration creates added utility for STORJ tokens by enabling new, automated payment functionality. Companies building on top of the Storj data layer, who accept payments from their customers in one token and need to convert a portion of those payments to STORJ tokens, can now do so through ShapeShift and their API. This approach eliminates many manual processes still found in digital currencies through the power of ERC20 smart contracts, simplifying the payment process for companies building on top of the Storj platform.  When Storj Labs migrated its SJCX CounterParty token to the STORJ ERC20 token, it was because our team understood the massive opportunity that is unlocked through the Ethereum platform, including smart contracts and the utility this can create. We look forward to seeing how customers and partners leverage the utility of STORJ through ShapeShift implementations, to power their applications and automate back-end processes. As background, ShapeShift is an instant digital exchange that allows users to swap any of its supported tokens for one another, going beyond the traditional markets like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Users select the token they wish to deposit, along with quantity, and they receive the corresponding amount of another token, based on the current exchange rate. In addition to its API, ShapeShift also has many other tools like the “Shifty button” that Storj and its partners can use to augment utility on the platform. If you have any questions about exchanging STORJ tokens on ShapeShift, reach out on our Rocket.Chat community. [Less]

Our community commitment to transparency and communication is of the utmost importance to us. As such, we are excited to be issuing our second quarterly newsletter—and the last one of this year! This past quarter has been filled with news about hires ... [More] on the engineering and marketing teams, technological advances with SIP09, our successful town hall event where we presented our technological roadmap and answered community questions, and so much more. This newsletter will highlight what we’ve accomplished this quarter and what we can look forward to in the next quarter. If you are new to Storj Bytes, please check out our last newsletter.  Storj Bytes is your resource for the latest product and technology updates and a look ahead at our roadmap. It also details community feedback and how we’re integrating it into our work.TECHNOLOGY IMPROVEMENTSSIP06 has improved our networkIn our last newsletter, we explained how SIP06 works and why we implemented it two months ago. Now we would like to update you on how it has significantly improved the network. Prior to SIP06, the load of Farmers on the Bridge was high: Each time the Bridge sent a contract for each shard upload, more than 1000 Farmers relayed this contract, and then the Bridge had to deal with the same number of OFFER messages. This congested the network and instantiated an overhead for the Bridge. As a result, farmers faced increased timeouts and error messages and were often unsuccessful in storing shards. A second significant issue prior to SIP06 implementation was an uneven shard distribution. The first node that sent an OFFER message to accept a contract would receive the shard from the Bridge. The way the network was organized, U.S.-based farmers received the majority of shards, while Farmers in Europe struggled to get any contracts. From the Clients´ perspective, upload and download speeds were slow because they Clients were not utilizing the whole Storj network—just the U.S. Farmer bandwidth. SIP06 solves both major problems described above by reducing the CPU load on the Bridge and Farmers.Clients are now receiving fewer error messages and can also upload more files. The shards are distributed ¨more evenly over the world, giving Clients maximum upload and download speeds. The Storj network has increased to 20PB as a result of SIP06! STORJ NOWThe STORJ token is now accepted as a form of payment. As a big part of our initiative to create more utility for the STORJ token, we’ve released a dramatically improved billing feature that accepts STORJ as a form of payment for storage space. This is only our first step to implementing many other features and requests so that the token can possibly be used in the future to buy other goods like swag. The community has been a great driver to push this feature—and we’re excited to finally put it into production. If you’re not sure where to see the STORJ token as a form of payment, log into the dashboard and navigate to the billing page. You should see it in the bottom right-hand corner. STORJ FORWARDBelow are forward-looking statements about our product direction. The development, release, and timing of any features or functionality described for our products remains at the sole discretion of Storj Labs. The information herein is not a commitment to deliver any material, code or functionality, and should not be relied upon in making purchase decisions.Storj will offer discounts to users who use the STORJ token for paymentsAs a way of giving back to the community and to increase the utility and velocity of the token, we will be releasing a discount program to complement the new billing feature. This program will benefit users who pay with the STORJ token by providing them with discounted pricing. This is our first initiative of many where we will provide added benefits to our community members who pay with STORJ.Documentation will be project-oriented and informative so developers, Farmers, users and partners can get onboarded Documentation and UI/UX is critical to our community growth and overall on-boarding experience for developers, Farmers, Storj partners, and users. During the town hall meeting, we gave a sneak peek of some ideas we’ve been working on to enhance your overall user experience. We’ve dedicated resources this quarter to design some UI/UX flows, and starting January 2018, Storj will have a dedicated team to work on documentation and UI/UX improvements. All of January 2018 will be spent on internal research for tools and UI/UX flows to assist in creating a blueprint for how the community will be onboarded. By February/March 2018 you should start to see changes. As these changes happen, we will be soliciting feedback to improve your experience.SIP09 accounts for the Bridge’s bandwidth usage and creates a reputation metric between a Client and Farmer on successful transfersSIP09 intends to solve two things: Create a reputation metric of Farmers who store shards and account for the Bridge’s bandwidth usage. SIP09 is the initial building block for creating Farmer metrics. It allows us to see if a Farmer was successful in providing a shard for download. As it stands, when the Bridge assigns a mirror shard to the nodes with the fastest response time to the Bridge’s request, the winning Farmer will receive a payout for answering to this request. Whether or not the shard has actually been transferred is irrelevant. As such, this inflates some Farmers’ payouts every month. To address this problem, SIP09 allows the Bridge to create a Storage Event—a JSON object that provides a unique token ID, each time a shard is upload or download as requested. The Client will then send an Exchange Report, consisting of a JSON object that has key information on uploads and downloads, on the SUCCESS or FAILURE of the transfer. Each Exchange Report must have a corresponding Storage Event, otherwise the transfer will not be considered. The Farmers’ report can help confirm whether the Client was able to send the transfer. A SUCCESS report positively affects Farmer reputation, and vice versa for a FAILURE report. The overall intention of accounting for the Bridge’s bandwidth usage is to keep Clients accountable for downloads. By doing so, Farmers can receive the appropriate payout for providing the bandwidth for these downloads. The Exchange Report has a unique token value that comes from the Storage Event. The Storage Event object will include the Client and Farmer pair and the hash of the shard. The Exchange Report is signed by the Client and Farmer. If both Exchange Reports indicate a success rate on a download, the Client will pay the Farmer. However, if the Farmer and Client-signed Exchange Reports differ or the Client claims the download was unsuccessful, we can search the Exchange Reports for validation by indexing with the unique token. Another option, in conjunction with evaluating the Exchange Reports, is to investigate the Client and Farmer behavior to determine whether the file download was successful. In summary, the aim of SIP09 is to generate accurate transaction events by strongly correlating the Client, Bridge, and Farmer reports. This will improve the interaction between the Client and Farmer. The Exchange Reports are also central for eventually creating incentives to reward reliable Farmers. From there, we can create Farmer reputation metrics based on successful transfers, so that shards can move towards the more reliable parts of the network. We are currently working on this protocol and hope to release it by next quarter.STORJ COMMUNITYStorj bounty program will be launched in January 2018The Storj bounty program is under development and should be launched in January. We are currently creating a developer support program where developers working on bindings to the libstorj library will get proper support from our engineers. In addition, translations, events, blogs, and much more will be added to this program in stages. Each project submitted will go through a submission and review process. This will ensure all projects will be fairly evaluated. People participating in the bounty program will have to follow our Code of Conduct that will be posted on Rocket.Chat and on the program’s website. Failure to comply will result is dismissal of any future participation in the program.Storj community website section in developmentWith over 12k members in Rocket.Chat and 145k community members total, it’s about time there’s a portion of the website dedicated to you! Starting January 2018,  Storj will be committed to working on a community section of the website. This will be your go-to-area to see community updates, newsletters, community-featured blogs, and other community programs. It’s our goal to make this portion of the website inclusive. We will update content weekly, and offer opportunities to contribute by being a guest writer for blogs and tutorials, and/or by participating in other projects. Thanks for a great year!We are pleased to be capping off a very successful 2017. With our Token Sale, the public launch of the Storj platform, user growth on both the Farmer and Client sides of the network, and expansion of the internal Storj team, we are so proud of the progress we have made this year. We thank you, our community, for the continued support you’ve given us throughout 2017 and are looking forward to more advances for 2018!While 2017 was wildly successful for Storj, we feel even more confident about the milestones we will achieve in 2018. We expect continued product improvements, increased use of the network, new partnerships and much, much more. This past year saw the benefits of decentralized applications take hold in the developer-community. Developers, companies and individual consumers began to see the need for decentralization in a world where we depend so much on data and highly value privacy. We believe in 2018 the demand for decentralization will grow even more, and Storj, in building the foundation to a decentralized world, will be poised to capture the vast majority of the market!  [Less]

When our team at Storj Labs architected the STORJ token sale, our goal was to ensure we had enough runway to realize our grand vision: to build the largest, fastest, most secure, decentralized cloud storage platform in the world. To accomplish this ... [More] lofty goal, we created a reserve of 245 million tokens we could use in the future to fuel the growth of our network. These tokens were placed into a six-month lock-up to be used at a later date. Among the ways we envisioned using these tokens included: financing future developments of Storj and the network, employee compensation, for grants or the purchase of equity in partners and other third-party projects built on top of the Storj ecosystem, Farmer payouts and incentives, a bounty program to incentivize certain projects and many other uses. These reserve tokens are critical to the long-term success of Storj and the network. Rather than selling all these tokens during the crowd sale earlier this year, we saw value in reserving them, so we could incentivize the community with tokens, giving them a reason to earn and use the tokens on the network. The lock-up for these STORJ tokens was slated to end December 20, 2017 at 12:00 AM ET - the same time as the final tokens from the token sale will become unlocked for token sale participants. Today, we are announcing an additional six-month lock-up for the 245 million STORJ tokens in our reserve. None of these tokens will go into circulation at this time. Ahead of the end of the next lock-up period, the Storj Labs team intends to announce its STORJ Token Distribution Plan. The goal of this plan will be to clearly outline how these tokens will be used and over what period of time. In six months, we expect to have a much better idea of the economic necessities and factors related to the token. There are currently some challenges around calculating how many tokens we will need over the coming years. Some of the factors we considered when discussing this new six-month lock-up include: Farmer payouts. We are currently rearchitecting our Farmer payout model. We plan to roll this out in Q1 next year. We currently utilize the majority of our liquid Storj-owned tokens for Farmer payouts, so this will be an important part of the Storj Token Distribution Plan. Economics behind the STORJ token. The current token marketplace is somewhat unpredictable. Our hope is that a clear distribution plan will bring stability to STORJ token marketplace. Scalability and technical improvements. We are currently making major product performance improvements aimed at enhancing our scalability. To give you an idea of how quickly we are scaling, we stored 5PB of data in September, 12PB of data in October and 20PB of data in November. In six months, our growth trajectory is expected be much more clear and predictable. Utility improvements for STORJ. As we enhance utility around STORJ, we expect the demand for our tokens to change. Our goal is to ensure the STORJ Token Distribution Plan matches supply with demand. We want to be as transparent as possible around how we are using these tokens. We view the community as an extension of our internal team and want to ensure everyone feels they have a voice in what Storj aims to become. The Storj Labs team is committed to building the largest decentralized cloud storage platform and we look forward to rolling out the STORJ Token Distribution Plan, which will highlight how we plan to accomplish this from a financial perspective. Stay tuned for more details in the first half of 2018! [Less]

Last week, the Storj Labs team attended Token Summit II in San Francisco. Storj was a platinum sponsor of the conference, which hosted 730 attendees from 38 countries around the world. It was great meeting so many people from companies building the ... [More] powerful applications that are driving the token-based economy, true to the central theme of the event.  Our own Shawn Wilkinson, Founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Storj Labs, presented at the conference, highlighting our network and the demand we’re seeing in the decentralized cloud storage space. Shawn recapped the massive traction we’ve seen with our network, the impressive scalability of the platform and new payment functionality using STORJ tokens. Payments with our STORJ ERC20 token have always been possible through a manual process, but we are now simplifying the payment functionality. Users who are storing files on the Storj Labs network simply have to send tokens to a specific wallet that corresponds to their account. We expect this to drive added interest in the token as users pay for the service they use on the Storj network. As we’ve mentioned before, Storj has a strong group of customers building on top of our platform. At the conference, we announced our newest partnership with Doc.ai, a blockchain-based AI platform, is also building on top of Storj to decentralize and secure medical data.Doc.ai uses AI and deep learning to improve healthcare. Its robo-doctor, a series of AI-based chatbots, allows users to quickly build their healthcare profile and receive insights based on their data. The AI platform is decentralized and allows healthcare providers and patients to collaborate on individual care that can lead to medical discoveries and much more. It works by decentralizing the medical data in a network where machines are at the center and humans are on the edge with data residing on their phones. It’s great to be working with a company that is pushing the limits in the healthcare industry on behalf of such a noble cause. We also had dozens and dozens of conversations with investors, entrepreneurs, developers and other interesting people who are in the process of building on top of the Storj platform. If you are one of these people, we will be in touch this week! For attendees, we also gave away quite a bit of SWAG at the booth at Token Summit, including tote bags, bottle openers, thumb drives and copious amounts of stickers. If you share this blog post on Twitter, or RT our link to this blog post, you’ll be entered to win 1 of 5 Storj hoodies. [Less]

Today, our team at Storj Labs, along with the team at SONM, formally announced that we will integrate our platforms to interact and share files directly. This announcement marks a major milestone for Storj, SONM and the cloud computing industry. The ... [More] integration of our platforms will create the first decentralized cloud computing platform that combines compute with persistent storage. There is an exploding demand for decentralized applications and these applications need a foundational layer on which they can build. In recent weeks, our team has announced several customers who are using Storj as the underlying storage layer to ensure their data remains secure, private and inaccessible to others. These partnerships include companies like CapLinked, YouNow and Loomia, as well as several others, who are building their platforms on top of Storj. Storj is providing these companies with a decentralized place they can persistently store their data long-term, however there is still a need for compute to process the data within the application. SONM, which stands for Supercomputer Organized by Network Mining, is a decentralized worldwide fog supercomputer for general purpose computing that ranges from site hosting to scientific calculations. The SONM platform also includes an internal peer-to-peer marketplace for the buying and selling of computing power. The defining feature of SONM’s platform is its decentralized and open-source structure, which is very similar to what Storj Labs does for storage capacity, making us natural allies. Compared to cloud services like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, SONM enables its customers to interact directly with each other in a peer-to-peer structure, creating a fair market of computing powers. Teaming up with Storj enables the uploading and downloading of computing tasks and persistent storage of data assets over time, making them accessible both for buyers and miners and helping both companies expand their capabilities within the market. The joint solution delivers privacy by design and security by default, leveraging encryption and file sharding to store data long-term. Our team is extremely excited about the capabilities that are made possible through this integration with SONM and we will plan to share updates as the integration progresses. [Less]

Over the past few weeks, you’ve likely noticed that STORJ tokens have been listed for trading on a number of new exchanges. The most recent listings were on Binance and Poloniex, two of the largest exchanges in the world. Our team has been working ... [More] hard to ensure you, our token holders, can easily trade your tokens - whether you’re selling tokens you’ve earned as a Farmer on the Storj network or acquiring tokens to purchase services. As we continue to find ways to expand the utility of the token, having a larger variety of places to trade STORJ is great for our community. We realize that everyone has platforms they prefer - whether it’s because of the functionality of the platform, the fees they charge (or don’t charge) or because of their geographic region. We will continue to do our best to accommodate all of our community and continue to get STORJ listed in as many exchanges as possible! These listings help our decentralized cloud storage platform stand out as well. As exchanges evaluate tokens for listing, they scrutinize whether the tokens have true utility. For example, recent reports indicate only 10 percent of tokens are in use after their respective token sales. When these exchanges list STORJ, it helps validate the utility of our token. We are seeing the amount of service payments using STORJ increase month-over-month. As we integrate with new companies like BLOCKv, Loomia and many others building on our platform, we expect that number to increase. Many of these companies are integrating token swaps with STORJ on the back-end using smart contracts, so when their customers pay for services with their proprietary tokens, the portion relating to their storage costs will be automatically converted to STORJ as it’s sent to us for payment. We’ve recently added new payment functionality to the Storj platform to make it even easier to pay with STORJ! We currently accept payment in STORJ, BTC and traditional currency and will soon add payment in ETH as well. Below is a detailed update on the new exchanges listing STORJ for trading: Binance (www.binance.com) - As one of the largest exchanges in the world, Binance trades more than $130 million worth of cryptocurrency each day. This makes it one of the largest exchanges in the world, not to mention China, where Binance is headquartered. On its first day listing STORJ, Binance exchanged $1.6 million in STORJ, making it the second largest market that day. Today, they exchanged more than $2 million! Poloniex (poloniex.com) - Prior to converting to our new ERC20 STORJ token, Poloniex was one of the top exchanges trading our old SJCX Counterparty token. Now, they are one of the top exchanges for STORJ as well! With nearly a quarter billion dollars worth of cryptocurrency traded on Poloniex each day, the platform is a favorite amongst many in our community. QRYPTOS (www.qryptos.com)- While you might not be familiar with QRYPTOS, you likely know its parent company QUOINE, which is another one of the world’s largest exchanges, headquartered in Japan. QRYPTOS and QUOINE are also launching a new exchange called LIQUID, which will enable the trading of tokens across a variety of other exchanges, ensuring token holders get the best prices when buying and selling tokens. LIQUID will also list STORJ when it launches in the first half of next year.Changelly (changelly.com) - For STORJ holders that want to convert their tokens to cryptocurrency beyond BTC and ETH, or use other tokens to purchase STORJ, Changelly makes this possible. Users simply send tokens to a specific address and Changelly sends them a corresponding value of their requested tokens back to their designated wallet. Additionally, Changelly offers easy token purchases directly with credit card payments. We are continuing to encourage all the major trading platforms to open markets for STORJ, including Bitfinex, HitBTC, GDAX, Kracken and ShapeShift. If there are particular exchanges where you’d like to see STORJ trading, please tweet at us and reach out to them directly to ask them to open a STORJ market. You can click the name of the corresponding exchange below to ask them via Twitter to start trading STORJ: Bitfinex  HitBTC  GDAX  Kraken  ShapeShift [Less]
