Latest news from the Octopus Community:   Release of the v2.5.1 The new release of Octopus is downloadable here. This version consolidates the improvements of the v2.5, before a major release at the end of November. The v3.0 will indeed include a ... [More] full management of accrual accounting in the loan tracking module, as well as a first iteration in the new savings module!   Octopus Microfinance Suite in India Octopus was introduced during the Microfinance and New Technology summit organized by PlanetFinance in Dehli. See the presentation by Pierre Pezziardi, a summary on Octopus’ blog, as well as the report from the session on MIS by Microfinance Insights.  On the 11th and 12th of November, the Octopus team is going to participate to the Indian Microfinance Conference, organized by ACCESS in Delhi. If you are planning to come to the conference and are interested in our project, do not hesitate to bring with you all your interrogations regarding Octopus. We will be glad to discuss with you…   About the Octopus Universities Discussions during the MFNT summit have turned a lot about IT education for MFIs. While great expectations have emerged with the first successes of Mobile Banking in Philippines or Kenya, the use of an automated and reliable MIS remains a huge challenge for most MFIs. The main obstacle remains the lack of experience of MFIs with IT projects (underestimation of the difficulties, myopia / belief than a list of functionalities is the best guarantee, etc.).  On the other hand, software providers have not learned much about the big failures of the past, due to the archaic belief that the longer the specifications are, the better it is. At Octopus, we believe that the success of an MIS implementation will depend on two main things:  the teams, that should be able to have a clear common understanding of the priority, and work in close interactionthe development process, that should allow to make quick changes in the software without regressions.  That is why we organize Octopus Universities, in which we teach and learn how to run a MIS that support fast change in total security. What is at stake is not how to select the right MIS, but rather how to build the right team – made of microfinance practitioners and developers– able to run and change the MIS securely, as the organizations grow and improve. The first Octopus University took place in Dushanbe (Tadjikistan) last summer. The next ones will take place in Dakar (Sénégal) in December 2008, and in Delhi (India) in January 2009.
