Ahoy! This here be a very special day, ye lubbers, fer more than one reason. First, it be International Talk Like a Pirate Day! A fine day if ever there was one. Second, today my friend Kristen flies in on one of those aero-planes to visit me after ... [More] not seein' 'er fer 12 years! But avast! Most...thirdly, today be the fine anniversary of the day that 10 years ago Bugzilla 2.0 was unleashed upon the seas o' tubes fer yer bug-trackin' use! And we've been deliverin' a smart series of releases in regular-like form ever since. Bugzilla 3.2 will be ourrrr fourteenth major release! That's quite a pack of releasin' we've been doin'. I've been managin' those releases fer about three or fourrr 'a them years, and contributin' a bit longer than that. I'm mighty proud to be a part of it all--'tis a grand thing to work on an open-source project a'used by so many'a ye fer so long.Feel free to blog about Bugzilla, say a few words in her honor, today. I think that'd be a mighty fun way to celebrate the day. If ye do, link to yer writins from the comments! :-)-Max [Less]

So, as some of you may know, the Mozilla Foundation funded my company, Everything Solved, to perform a survey of various Bugzilla-using organizations around the world to find out how they use Bugzilla, what problems they have with it, what they like ... [More] about it, and generally get some guidance on where we should go with the future of Bugzilla.I've published the survey results on the Mozilla Wiki.Generally, doing the survey was a great experience. I think it's something that all open-source projects should do, because one of the big problems that an open source project has is being disconnected from its users, unless there's a big commercial organization backing the project. Usually with proprietary software, there are sales and support people who talk to customers all day, but that's pretty rare in open source.Doing a survey also gives the people being contacted a sense that the open-source project cares about them. I consistently got feedback like, "Wow, we're really glad you care about us and are asking us these questions." Users genuinely really want to help you improve your software. They might file bugs, they might not. They might send support requests, they might not. But neither of those are really a good way to get this general sort of feedback, anyhow. Bug reports and support requests are too numerous, too unstructured, and don't answer the specific sort of questions that you'd want to know in a survey. So I strongly encourage other open source organizations to go out there and follow our lead! Get to know your users! Talk to them. :-) They'll appreciate it, and you'll gain extremely valuable data.-Max [Less]

I’m publishing this article on behalf of Guy Pyrzak, our UI guy at Bugzilla: With the recent upgrade of BMO to 3.2, there have been a few usability improvements and a few regressions. These are all things that might be expected with major upgrades to any UI. The Bugzilla team has enjoyed getting the feedback from [...]

While talking on IRC about how to make editable fields and the comment box closer so that you can easily comment and edit fields, especially the bug status, I suggested this mockup (ignore the fields you never heard about in the right column, those are custom fields). Is that something you would like to see [...]

As most of you know, Bugzilla 3.2rc1 is available for download since August 12 and bugzilla.mozilla.org upgraded to this version two weeks later, last Thursday. As I wrote in my last blog, b.m.o is not the first major installation to upgrade to 3.2rc1, so now seems a good time to get some feedback from people [...]
