AFNI is for display and analysis of 3D and 3D+time brain images -- mostly for functional MRI (FMRI) purposes, but also has some diffusion tensor image (DTI) capabilities. The SUMA module within AFNI can display 2D surface models of the cortex embedded into 3D space, and also display functional mapping data on top of these surface models.
