GDCM is an excellent tool for reading and parsing DICOM files.
I've been working with DICOM files since 2003. After using VTK and Slicer 3D classes for reading DICOM files, I tried GDCM and it proved to be the best DICOM reading solution, supporting even compressed files.
We've been using GDCM since mid 2008 on an open source 3D medical imaging reconstruction software called InVesalius, developed using Python.
GDCM community has always been very supportative, answering quickly to questions and solving problems.
