After trying literally every readily available window manager on Debian, Gentoo, and Arch, pekwm ("pake-vay-ehm" to its creators) has saved me from developing my own. I was *this* close, really!
Pekwm was exactly what I was looking for. Anything from emulating GNU screen, to environments that even a Windows user would find comfortable, are all possible by means of easy-to-read configuration files (and maybe an add-on or two).
You don't need to buy into Plan9, like with wmii or dwm, you can opt out of using a mouse entirely, like with ratpoison, and you don't need to squint at an XML file, like you do with Openbox. If you want a lightweight set-up, don't bother installing a status bar or a background picture. It's that simple.
In short, pekwm gives you all the good, without forcing any of the bad on you. Easily my favourite window manager, hands down.
