To me, the Top Gainers
project list looks almost identical to the Most Popular
one. At any rate, it shows only projects which have a fairly high profile already.
I think that this list would be more useful if it showed those projects that skipped the most popularity ranks in the last 24 hours, or maybe even 7 days. I use Ohloh to discover neat open source projects, so it would be good to know about those projects that are not as well-known as, say, Mozilla Firefox, but have made people happy enough to rank them high.
Thanks,
Andreas.
hi Andreas,
When we released the new homepage we weren't sure what the top gainers
would show. As you point out - it's been a failure since it mostly mirrors top stacked projects.
The goal is to reveal interesting (positive) trends in project popularity. Perhaps a simple approach would be to show a simple ratio of:
RATIO = [STACKS DURING LAST WEEK] / [STACKS DURING 2 WEEKS AGO]
We could filter out projects that are less than 2 weeks old. This would show projects who are seeing proportionally higher stacking.
Sound reasonable? Any other suggestions?
That could work, I think. I also like the idea of limiting project age for its potential of limiting the possibility of stacking wars between projects.
Jason, that sounds like a much better approach than what we see now at least so give it a shot and see. You can always trim it further later on should it not be enough.
