I'm the creator of a couple of open-source software projects. I keep having the displeasure of receiving search alerts from Google, featuring my project names, leading me to this scummy pond that seems to exist only to take credit for hosting
metadata about projects that it has nothing at all to do with.
Please get bought by some old-guard media company so you can go buy your fucking segways, and they can disassemble the site.
The returns you are getting from Google may be based on something like open source software developer
which would bring up this site as well as your projects. Depends on how you set up your Google Alert. If ohloh.net is link-jacking
, they would have to add your name to metatags or some such thing. Seems hardly worth the trouble unless you are famous. You ought to find out why this is happening before leaving hate messages that might not be deserved. I'm glad you are not in MY life.
I am in your life; you probably use my software. You didn't read my post--or perhaps didn't understand it--but still replied to it. Perhaps I should be glad that you're not in my life.
My search alerts are on the names of my projects, not on open source software
. Why would I have a search alert on open source software
? The problem is that if someone searches for one of my projects by name, they might get the ohloh page, and be misled into believing that this nonsense is somehow affiliated with me or with my work.
In spite of moosemoosemoose rudeness, I really think he got a point. I'm not affected by that issue, but probably many people are, and that is even without them being aware of it. Ultimately it could lead to reducing overall open source software adoption, so this issue is quite serious. What I propose would be to show a splash screen clearly indicating that this is not the project page and a predominant link to that page to visitors coming from Google.
Even better, let the project administrator decide if the ohloh.net project page redirect to the project main website.
If it bothers you, just remove your project(s) from ohloh.
Aside from calling bullshit on this troll, I'm just posting to say that nobody should be able to remove anything.
If the source is open then Ohloh has the right to do what they want with it, including running a scummy link farm
if they like, but we all know that's not what they're doing.
@lynx^3 Your advice would make sense if I had done anything in the first place to get my projects on
Ohloh.
@Gaz Aside from your having not a fucking clue, nobody has the right to do whatever they want
, even with free software. Free software is still protected either by copyright or by whatever license the author attaches to it. Beyond that, Ohloh is scummy not because they discuss various software packages, but because they deliberately design their site so as to appear as if it has something to do with the projects in question.
@moose^3 Your first post is listed as being four months ago. I guess that means that altho this is a 'feedback' forum, it might not be monitored by administrators so further posts here are kind of futile, aren't they? Yet you're still in such a rage, venting it on anybody and everybody. To me that suggests there is something very wrong with your life. Why don't you fix whatever it is, and if you can't fix it, go on the next thing, and purge yourself of the poison instead of trying to infect everybody around you. I bet this isn't the only place you are spewing out hate. Sad. I wish you well, but I will not be back here again. I repeat, I'm glad you're not in MY life, and you aren't, regardless of your strange claim that you are. You probably won't believe this, but I truly hope you can get out of the hate pit you're in. You're gonna ruin your life if you don't, and no doubt take some other people down with you.
@Crone Yet another meaningless post from an Ohloh apologist, ignoring my substantive points. Score one for head-in-the-sand ignorance.
Are you suggesting that Ohloh are using your source code in a way not permitted by its license? Perhaps you should read the definition of free software.
Also, do you consider freshmeat a scummy link-farm too?
moosemoosemoose:
Primary reason why one would release the source under an OSI-approved license is for another person to use it. If you did not like it, you should not have released it. What part of your licensing did Ohloh violate? In fact, why are you against it when they are spreading news of your project? One cannot easily access your code without seeing your documentation which is not readily available on Ohloh.
There is really no significant downside to Ohloh, unless your code and project management is horrible and therefore you have several Ohloh-autogenerated tags that, for some reason, offend you particularly. In which case, tough luck. Remove the code from the web, and be done with it. The scummy link farm will cease to link to you.
PS Ohloh is now owned by Sourceforge/Geeknet. If you still insist on considering them scummy, then you have zero free software or open source spirit in you.
I personally am quite interested in what this alleged project is that's got him/her on a high horse. Eitherway, thanks Ivan for the info. Geeknet it seems is doing quite well for us all.
