Gravatars unreliable?

I finally installed a Gravatar yesterday, but it seems to display unreliably: only about one page in five seems to show it (of those pages that actually should show it, of course). I've seen the same page, on subsequent visits, gain and lose it. In forums where I've contributed several comments to the same discussion, some of them may have it while others do not.

I don't know if anyone else's is also unreliable.

Hi Jack,

You're not the first to have trouble. Seen this thread?

Gravatar has had its ups and downs, both with the signup process and serving images. We've been giving the benefit of the doubt, and I know they've been working hard recently to install new servers and new software.

In the end, it looks like we may end up implementing some kind of local image hosting ourselves (it's not hard, of course, but everything takes time).

Mine doesn't seem to load at all heh.

Robin, perhaps we could have some box to provide a link to an image to be used as our avatars?

My gravatar just displays as the default G.

  1. If you really plan to implement your own system of avatars, this is my proposal : Automatically import avatar from gravatar. You may have to test the content of uploaded image, to see if it is the default G, or another image. If the image you've uploaded is just the default G, then, you have to reload the avatar, without the parameter size in URL.
  2. If you'll continue using gravatar, you could propose in UserSettings an option to permit users to manually inform you that their avatars don't work with the &size= parameter in URL.
