I really do like the idea of Gravatar ... but there is something seriously wrong somewhere in the chain of implementation.
When I signed up here a couple of days ago I also signed up for a gravatar on the same email...
Yet for some reason it doesn't show up. I set my avatar as G rating (ohloh wants PG), so that's fine
Is this a common problems?
Am I missing a point?
Do you like the colour purple?
What underware do you have on?
Any of the following muchly appreciated: Discussion, commentary, feedback, debate, ranting, jibbering, fluffly white clouds, large piles of gold pieces
Flibble?
I am having exactly the same problem, my email address is registered there too, but it looks to me like a gravatar problem, I built the url like how it is explained here: http://site.gravatar.com/site/implement but I didn't get my avatar back.
Yeah ... I just tried that myself ... you'd think it'd be noticed and fixed if if is a gravatar problem :/
ohloh might not lowercase your email before md5ing it, like gravatar does. Do you have any caps in your registered email here?
No, I haven't any caps in my email address.
PS
At the moment I get a nice 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable
error message when I try to access the gravatar.com web site.
no caps in mine either
Hmmm. I have just uploaded an avatar at gravatar.com,
and it isn't displayed on ohloh.net either.
I have played around with the url ohloh.net generates for the image
a bit and found the following:
the url looks like this:
http://www.gravatar.com/avatar.php?gravatar_id=&rating=PG&size=80
The url incorporates a size=80
parameter. this url leads to the gravatar logo in 80X80.
if i replace the 80 by any smaller number, then my avatar is displayed.
i have uploaded my avatar in precisely 80x80 pixels.
seems to be a gravatar bug?
hey now we have an explanation why the avatar is displayed int the forum posts: here we have size=32
Workaround for me:
upload an avatar that is bigger than 80x80 (I chose 81x81).
this gets cropped and apparently also the scaled image for 80x80 is generated this way.
Hello,
I have uploaded an image to the gravatar site but I am not able to assign it to my mail address. All I am getting is this:
Application error
Change this error message for exceptions thrown outside of an action (like in Dispatcher setups or broken Ruby code) in public/500.html
Anybody has seen this error there? Any workarounds? My image was cropped from a bigger one there. It is G
rated.
Is there a feedback/bug link on the gravatar site somewhere?
Thanks for any suggestions,
David
I've nearly given up hope for this gravatar stuff. I put a pic on gravatar last week, but I've yet to see it come up here on ohloh. When I look at the gravatar image link, it shows a completely different md5sum value than I get calculating my own md5sum against the same email address I have on both my ohloh and gravatar accounts. It's like ohloh is not calculating it via md5sum, or else it's mangling the email address value somehow before it makes its calculation.
Hello,
just as an additional note, Gravatar folks fixed some issues on their system last month:
http://blog.gravatar.com/2007/6/11/updated-croppr-stats
So, if you're still having problems, try to re-upload your avatar again (and try with
different sizes, to make sure!).
HTH,

No, I think there are newer problems... I get this when trying to set a new gravatar to my email address:
Application error
Change this error message for exceptions thrown outside of an action (like in Dispatcher setups or broken Ruby code) in public/500.html
Was getting it a week ago doing same thing, so I'm not feeling to sure that gravatar is being maintained very closely.
Chuck, I'm experiencing the exact same thing, and I share your sentiments with regard to maintenance of the service. I encountered this problem when I created my account on the July 21st, and it has persisted ever since. I've attempted to contact the administrators at the only two email addresses I can find (support@gravatar.com and privacy@gravatar.com) but after more than a week, still have not received a response. And the help area is obviously useless. Cropping the image in the manner described does not help either.
Yup i got the same problem, sigh got my wordpress plugin needs it =(
FYI, this was finally fixed this afternoon...
yep, it was a long story to get it fixed. i invited weigon (jan at lighttpd.net) to ohloh, he want to use gravatar and poke darix, and draix find mojombo on irc and asked him to fix it. and it works :D
woohoo... mine's working now too!
Well, it worked for one page load... now it's failing again for all pages I load up... !@#$%^&*
and now working across all the pages I've hit... so far so good, then...
Just to inform everybody that after the fixes it started to work for me also. Thanks to the person who made the change.
No for me folks, my gravatar is still not displayed in ohloh. Without the &size=80 stuff it works well, but ...
hum - for some reason it does not work for me either. joy...
actually, it works here in the forum, not in my ohloh page ;-)
