LimeBits JavaScript + WebDAV platform

Hi Ohloh Friends,
An alpha release of LimeBits (limebits.com) is out, to attract early comments and criticisms -- on design as well as implementation.

LimeBits is a project to build an open-source code-sharing community. It tries to address several problems in open source development:

  • Code embarrassment -- withholding release until overripe
  • Flaming and hostility
  • Unfriendliness/inaccessibility to novices
  • Barriers to incremental code development
  • Complexity of use, development, and deployment
  • Incoherence of some system design and usability

The goal is to create a system that

  • minimizes back-end processing and shifts control to the client side,
  • is a live, public runtime platform, as well as a collaborative development repository,
  • lets you share and copy websites, including all dynamics, as well as components,
  • uses web standards for interoperability,
  • engages open-source community members supportively.

QUESTIONS:

  • Design -- What design requirements would you find compelling for LimeBits? Would they expand the community of open-sourcers?
  • Implementation -- What are the pros/cons of JavaScript + WebDAV as a live, runtime platform for dynamic websites?
  • Social -- How can LimeBits structure community interactions to help participants feel welcomed, supported, and appreciated?
  • Governance -- How should open-source contributors who use LimeBits participate in making decisions? Should there be a .org or foundation?

Thanks and best wishes,
--Jonathan A. Marshall
