The projects used for Desktop
![]() |
Ubuntu
Notes:
I have been using Linux for about 3 years. I started with Fedora, but tried Ubuntu with version 6.10 and have chosen it over other distros. Now using 8.04 and 8.10. |
![]() |
Capistrano
Notes:
A script driven deployment tool designed for use with Rails web applications. A single command can install a production server release on a cluster of servers. Way cool. |
![]() |
GIMP
Notes:
Whenever you need to edit a .gif or a .jpg file, Gimp is your best choice on Linux. I haven't begun to understand all of the features, so I use only a small subset, but it does what I want it to do. |
![]() |
nginx
Notes:
Used by my hosting server rather that Apache. |
![]() |
RSpec
Notes:
Just now investigation RSpec and Behavior-Driven-Development. Looks intriguing. |
![]() |
sudo
Notes:
Part of the Ubuntu Linux environment for password management. Better than operating as super-user all the time, even on a single-user desktop. |
![]() |
MySQL
Notes:
My choice for a generic database server. It works well, is simple to use. I recommend the for-fee Navicat tool as a MySQL browser. |
![]() |
GNU Make
Notes:
Absolutely necessary if you are intent on building anything from source. |
![]() |
Rake
Notes:
Think make for Ruby. Installed as a GEM. |
![]() |
Git
Notes:
The Ruby community is moving to Git, so I better move with them. I am looking for a good Git GUI browser, but have not yet found one. Any suggestions are welcome. |
It's a list of software used to accomplish something. LAMP is an example.
