A good example here would be Refbase (http://sourceforge.net/projects/refbase/). This is a bibliography program build on a single mysql table. The author said he would use a normalized table design if he had time to re-create the project.

The developers of three sourceforge projects working on bibliographic web database applications (PHPBibMan, refbase & WIKINDX) agreed on having one common format for data exchange.
We plan to use the "Metadata Object Description Schema" (MODS)
as this common format, a XML based schema which is currently developed by the Library of Congress and that will be also supported by other projects like the OpenOffice bibliographic project:
http://www.loc.gov/standards/mods/
The adoption of a standard exchange format should enable users to easily exchange bibliographic data between different database applications. Additionally, this standard format will reduce the task of developing special import filters and reference formatting styles since they will be inter-changable between database applications.
In order to align the development of bibliographic databases for the web we created a separate sourceforge project:
http://bibliophile.sourceforge.net/
The Bibliophile project aims to promote standards, discussion among users on necessary features and a variety of specific solutions for different fields of research.
