It's been 2 years now since the OpenTree Library project was founded. We've had a lot of bug fixes this past year, but also a refactoring to improve the design by separating meshers and generators. (0 comments)

It's been 2 years now since the OpenTree Library project was founded. We've had a lot of bug fixes this past year, but also a refactoring to improve the design by separating meshers and generators. Now to announce a new direction for OpenTree: OTL ... [More] Reloaded is a project of OpenTree which intends to redesign and rewrite the library from scratch. The reason for this project is mainly because the current design will not suit the need of our potential users. Many game developers do not want to generate trees at runtime but prefer to precalculate them. The new project will provide a better set of tools so that the library is more useful to game developers. We will create a better set of tools including a Designer application which will make designing trees simple, and a community site which hosts user-contributed trees. We will also implement other generation/mesher algorithms, like an L-Systems generator and a curvature-based mesher. All of this is still in the planning stages and subject to change, but we're already getting excited. You can see our current ideas on the wiki at http://opentreelib.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/OTL_Reloaded. We'll post our progress on OTL Reloaded in upcoming news entries. [Less]

It's been exactly one year since SourceForge accepted our project request and the project is still going. That's a reason to celebrate! OpenTree is a library which provides 3d tree generation for real-time applications such as games and visualization ... [More] software. Impressed by what commercial engines provide, we wanted to have nice trees in our games too. Unfortunately, those commercial engines were not open source and far from cheap. Aware of what effort it would take to create decent trees, we started a cross-platform, engine-independent library in hope that others who would like trees in their games as well will join. To celebrate the one year birthday of OpenTree, we hereby announce a coding contest! Currently, we have a total pot of $200.00 USD that we can give away for code. If there are a lot of good contributions, we might donate $100.00 USD extra or so. Depending on the quality of the contribution and the amount of participants, the size of prizes will range from $20.00 to $100.00 USD.
