Since last Friday there are problems with redirecting emails from a Gmail account. It looks like Gmail has changed its policy and now only accepts emails with your own From address. Redirected emails don't have that, but they have a Resent-From

header with your own address, which indicates by whom the message is reintroduced into the transport system. This is fully compliant with RFC 2822, so I hope that Gmail changes its policy again soon, to allow redirecting of emails once again... [Less]

I'm proud to announce that Mail Redirect made it to the list of Featured Add-ons for February. When support for Mail Redirect was moved back to add-ons.mozilla.org there was an increased number of daily downloads. I hope this exposure has a similar effect and we can welcome a lot of new users!

50 days after releasing version 0.7.8 it's a good time to look at the statistics for Mail Redirect. Because I removed the add-on's own update information all users who installed version 0.7.8 reverted back to the original update mechanisme on
... [More]
addons.mozilla.org. This also allowed me to see how many users had downloaded a version of Mail redirect during the time it was not available on addons.mozilla.org. As you can see in the picture below the daily user count increased from about 12500 to well over 25000 in the first two weeks after the release. That means that half of the users took the trouble to download the extension from another place when it wasn't updated on addons.mozilla.org.
Since new versions of add-on's are reviewed before they are approved, it took some time after the release before the people who were already on an amo version got updated. Version 0.7.8 was reviewed on october 24 and from that day on you see the number of users using version 0.7.7 rapidly decreasing.
Now there's two things that are bothering me:
About 10 percent of the users are still using 0.7.4. This is not that surprising if you know that that was the last version that supported Thunderbird 2.0.0. and about 10 percent of the users are still on Thunderbird 2.0.0.. But I just wonder why people are still using such an old version of Thunderbird and if I should do anything to try to get those users to also benefit of the later additions and fixed I made to Mail Redirect.
Just recently there was a discussion about Mozilla having plans to merge addons.mozilla.org into Firefox Marketplace and then dropping support for Thunderbird and SeaMonkey. If that happens all of the users that have downloaded a version from mozdev.org or sourceforge.net in the past and who are now back on addons.mozilla.org may need to find and install a future version manually again.
Anyway, there's already some bugs found in version 0.7.8 and some new features I've build so version 0.7.9 isn't far away anymore.
I hope you all keep using Mail Redirect and enjoy redirecting your emails...

Today I released Mail Redirect 0.7.8. I've been working on this version for a while but an error with redirecting to mailing lists with lots of addresses prevented me from releasing it earlier.

addons.mozilla.org, I've removed the update information from this version. This means that once you've installed this version you'll get your future updates again from addons.mozilla.org. If you don't want that and want to get beta versions or other pre-releases, you can manually install Mail redirect from sourceforge.
Here's the changes for version 0.7.8:
Change From to Resend-From in Redirect window to prevent ambiguities with wrong From address in bounced mails
Fix bug with using mailing lists from a secondary address book
Fix bug with from address not being selected in some cases
Fix bug with long resent-headers not being wrapped according to RFC 2047
Fix styling error which resulted in a not displaying message list in combination with MicroThunderbird theme
Add Redirect button to multimessage conversation view
Add Resent-To: undisclosed-recipients:; header when redirecting only as bcc
Restore default update mechanism using addons.mozilla.org
Restore options and icon in add-on's configuration file
