Student applications for the Summer of Code have now closed. Thanks to everyone who submitted an application! We were pleasantly surprised by the number (and quality!) of the applications we received. We will have a really hard time now picking the ... [More] best ones out of the 50 applications we got.In the meantime, can any students please keep an eye on their applications in the Google web app - we may have additional questions or comments as we review the applications. Thanks. For the curious: Applications were submitted for the following project ideas:New install scriptGUI for config.phpWebservices APIImproving the commentsE-commerce pluginWebDAV APIArticle plugin for Geeklog 2Application server base for Geeklog 2We don't know yet how many students Google will assign to Geeklog but it will most likely not be enough to implement all of the above projects. So in addition to picking the best students, we will also have to decide between these projects ... [Less]

The 5th and final release candidate of the forum project version 2.6 has just been released. It's been a few months of work and I appreciate the testing and feedback by the community. I'm sure there are a few remaining issues but it's been well ... [More] tested over the past few months.I've included a summary of the changes and you can refer to the plugin which includes a txt file outlining all the changed files. There are no database changes so all that should be required is to replace the changed files or complete directories. Existing sites running a previous RC release do not need to run any upgrade/update - just replace all the plugin files.Download Link Please post feedback and issues in the forums on My Site or in the Plugins Support forum on this site Fixed issue where the Gravatar images were not being displayed Forum admin -> Delete Category now shows if category has no forums Added rel=nofollow to temporary links like latest topic Fixed small layout issue with Topic heading Added Re-Sync of Forum topic when using the story migrate feature to update counters Fixed several issues with Move Topic and move post feature - update last post info related Fixed issue where "View New Posts" would not appear Fixed issue with the View New Posts report Added advanced search types to plugin search feature [Mark Evans] Re-Sync the forum now after migrating stories to the forum to update forum indexes. Geeklog has been accepted in to the Google Summer of Code(tm) 2007.For those not familiar with the concept: Google Summer of Code(tm) is a program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source projects. Please contact us if you have any questions or further proposals for projects to implement as part of the Summer of Code. You can email us at contact-us(AT)lists.geeklog.net or use this form.We are very excited to be taking part in the Summer of Code and are looking forward to working together with the students. This is a great way for students to get some experience in working on an open source project. And for Geeklog, we hope to not only get some new features but also some new members for the Geeklog community.Update: Google has extended the deadline for student applications until March 26th.Note: We had a problem with the contact address on the 21st and most of the 22nd. GL-Utility 1.0.4 has now been released. It includes a few bug fixes found during installation as of GeekLog 1.4.1. It also includes a few fixes for sites using url_rewrite and resetting log files not in the geeklog log folder.New features include a ... [More] configuration viewer to easily view the geeklog configuration settings as well as a really simple custom autotag feature. The latter feature is far from as useful as the autotag plugin but may satisfy some basic needs.I would also like to push for the spam-x synchronization feature added in GL-Utility 1.0.3. I have used it for quite some time now, synchrinizing the black lists of several of my geeklog sites. The main advantage of this is that whenever one of my sites get spam that is not caught by the spam filters I can quickly update all the black lists to block further spam attempts on all my geeklog sites. This feature may be protected by a password if you do not want to share your black list information, bue you may also synchronize against the Plugin CMS black list if you want. Obviously it would be terrific if one of the largest receivers of GeekLog spam attacks (i.e. geeklog.net) would enable synchronization as well. The only disadvantage is that spammers will have the opportunity to see the black list them selfs. [Less]

With Geeklog 1.4.1 finally out, it's time to make plans for the next release. At which point we can't help realize (again), that our list of open feature requests is embarrassingly long. So it's about time we do something about it.Fortunately, we ... [More] just had an offer to support Geeklog development which lets us try out something new (for us at least): Bounties. The idea is that we identify tasks that probably wouldn't get implemented otherwise and add some incentive to have someone jump in and implement them. In other words, contributors are getting a chance to get paid for their contribution to Geeklog (not much, but still ...).Our friendly new sponsor, AOE media GmbH, has commited to a monthly donation for the duration this year. So now we need your help in identifying the things that you would like to see implemented. Please keep in mind that we're not looking for new ideas at this point, but that we want to reduce our backlog of feature requests. We'd like to have that discussion in the forums mostly, so if you have any general questions or issues with the bounty system, please use this thread. To chip in your favorite feature request, please use this thread.Once we've got an overview over the most-wanted tasks, we will probably set up a poll to figure out the exact order (keep in mind that we only have limited financial resources). We're awaiting your feedback! The lasted update - the 3rd release candidate of the forum project version 2.6 has just been released.Mark and I are hopeful this is the final release before a final 2.6 version. We had hoped RC2 was that release but a number of issues were reported ... [More] and we found and fixed a number of other items as well as doing some code cleanup. I've included a summary of the changes but you can refer to the plugin which includes a txt file outlining all the changed files. There are no database changes so all that should be required is to replace the changed files or complete directories.Download Link Please post feedback and issues in the forums on My Site or in the Plugins Support forum on this site Summary of changes Performance Improvements to the main forum index page Added option in plugins config.php to show/hide moderators on the main forum index.php Code cleanup to remove un-used variables and older code that was not being used Better support for Fullname or username - GL main site config.php $_CONF['show_fullname'] setting User online status will not be shown as online if user setting for privacy set Use htmlspecialchars() instead of htmlentities() in createtopic.php - better support for non-english language SQL changes in a number of other user and admin scripts to reduce SQL overhead - better use of the last_post_rec field Fixed an issue with deleting of a post - and not updating the last reply by and date info Fixed issues with certain characters like [] being converted to their HTML entities equivelent BBCode tags should not be interpretted if in a CODE block Preview now better handles the formatting to show all final formatting and filtering so it should be as saved Corrected the bug in RC2 where two items in the forum user menu were reversed Added a new link in the user menu to 'Mark all Read' - marks all topics in all categories as read Added TITLE help for the Forum User menu when user hovers over the menu links Fixed missing site footer in the memberlist report Added missing language define on the forum members report page Fixed bug where if SPAMX plugin detected spam - it would cause a header already posted error Fixed an issue with a [forum:123] autotag if you did not enter a title for the link Couple of template tweaks [Less]

The official release version of Geeklog 1.4.1 is now available for download. To recap the new features:Support for Microsoft SQL Server (in addition to the continued support for MySQL). This feature was single-handedly implemented by Randy Kolenko. ... [More] We also owe thanks to Mark Evans for his help in testing and debugging it.The Geeklog Calendar is now a plugin, so it can easily be disabled or replaced.Multi-language support lets you create sites where the content changes when you switch languages. So you can have translated versions of articles and only show those in the visitor's preferred language.Better spam protection by including support for SLV and offering hooks for CAPTCHAs.Various other improvements, e.g. an option to "mass delete" users, a redesigned account information page, updated version of FCKeditor (now again including a file manager), and more. With this release, we're also saying goodbye to the year 2006 as well as the Geeklog 1.3.x branch, for which support has now ended. Geeklog 1.4.1 is a recommended upgrade for all users of previous versions. Those upgrading from Geeklog 1.4.1rc1 will find a list of all the changed files in the file changed-files in the docs directory. In case you're upgrading from beta 1 or 2, we suggest you replace all of the files. There were no database changes over the betas or rc1, so there's no need to run the install script again. One theme change that we'd like to point out is for the file preferences/profile.thtml where the input fields for the user's location and homepage were accidentally restricted to 32 characters each. If you're using the Professional theme or a theme based on the 1.4.1 version of the Professional theme, please make sure to pick up this fix. When upgrading from an earlier version (1.4.0 or 1.3.x), simply follow the upgrading instructions. Please note that there were a lot of theme changes that you may have to apply in case you're using a customized theme. Updated themes for Geeklog 1.4.1 should shortly be available from the usual places, e.g. www.geekdownloads.net [Less]

The first release candidate for Geeklog 1.4.1 is now available for download. This release fixes the remaining issue with MS SQL, improves multi-language support, and fixes a couple of other bugs. There were no database or language file changes, but ... [More] we did some final tweaks of the Professional theme. We have also added new API functions for plugins to hook into submission forms (e.g. registration, comments, stories). The new version of Mark Evans' CAPTCHA plugin is the first to make use of those new functions and should be much easier to install now. While this is not the final 1.4.1 yet, we would like to ask you to download it and try it out to help us track down any remaining issues. Please also keep in mind that once 1.4.1 is out, the support for Geeklog 1.3.11, and therefore for the entire 1.3.x line, will end. So now would be a good time to start planning for an upgrade of your site. We would also like to send out a call to send in any translations (updated or new) that you may have made. Geeklog ships with language files for over 30 languages, but not all of them have been updated for this new release yet. If you need help with the translations, our geeklog-translations mailing list is the place to ask.If all goes according to plan, the final 1.4.1 should be ready before the end of the year. [Less]

The second release candidate for the Forum plugin ver2.6 has just been released. In the past month, there have been 700 downloads and a few issues have surfaced. The new release includes a text file summarizing the changes. Mark Evans will be ... [More] releasing a new version of his Captcha Plugin and this release includes his changes for the forum to be able to support using Captcha verification for all users or just anonymous users. This site is now running the RC2 version, so please report any issues. If this release does not not reveal any major issues, then I will be able to release a final version in a few weeks. There are no database changes, only file changes. Best option is to replace all the program files and templates or view the changed files log. This would be a good time to send me any language translations to be included in the final release.Download Link: Forum Version 2.6 RC2 [Less]
